Local Museum Celebrates Diverse Wentworth Collection with "Back By Popular Demand" Exhibit
The new exhibit, Back by Popular Demand: The Wonderful World of T.T. Wentworth, Jr., revisits the look and character of the original museum's interior. Visitors can expect to see wonderful displays of Wentworth's oddities and antiques that he spent his lifetime collecting. Staff recreated the fun and light-hearted ambiance of the original museum by stacking pieces of the collection from floor to ceiling, using very few modern museum cases, and incorporating the original labels and notes. According to Gale Messerschmidt, Curator of Exhibits: "Many of the displayed items are old local favorites that have not been seen by visitors for some time, such as the huge "dinosaur" bone, Wentworth's collection of hubcaps and license plates, and the test bombs donated by a local junk yard." The T. T. Wentworth, Jr. Florida State Museum is open free to the public, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Archaeology Field School at Arcadia Mill
An on-site field laboratory will be available to the public on Fridays during June and July.
Contact: Adrianne Sams, site manager, at 850-626-3084, or email her.
The 2010 Archaeological Field School at Arcadia Mill marks the second year of focused research on the residential areas of the antebellum water-powered complex. This ethnically diverse industrial community, populated by an enslaved African-American labor force, Anglo-American workers, and an elite class of management/owners, presents an unprecedented opportunity to examine the archaeology of slavery, social structure and community organization within an industrial context. Building on the 2009 Arcadia field school, in which a residential area of the community was archaeologically identified, participants in the 2010 field school will undertake large-scale excavations of architectural and refuse deposits identified in 2009. The public is greatly encouraged to visit the site and learn more about the archaeology of Arcadia Mill.
